On Friday 28 June 2019 our Girl Friday Breakfast Club guest speaker will be the artist and author, Tania Kovats.

Tania Kovats' sculptures, large-scale installations, commissions, writing, and drawings, explore our understanding of landscape and water, and travel is often central to her work, from Meadow (2007) - the transportation of a complete wildflower meadow by canal boat from Bath to London - to her 2008 journey around South America, exploring the landscape where Darwin first began to develop his evolutionary ideas. Recently she has focused on water as her central subject, the seas and oceans, river systems, maritime culture, flooding and tides, necessarily touching on environmental concerns. Her publications demonstrate her commitment to drawing as a specific discipline and form of expression with its own discrete discourse that renders thought both visible and external. She celebrates the democratic nature of drawing, its unique horizontal quality that describes a link through the thoughts and visualisations of scientists, engineers, sculptors, designers, performers, children, architects, surgeons – the list is endless. Drawing makes thought visible and belongs to everyone. As such, it is an infinite and varied means of communication that continues to be expanded and enriched by practitioners.

Tania Kovats is an award winning artist; she exhibits nationally and internationally, publishes regularly, and her work is held in major collections. Recent exhibitions include Oceans at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Evaporation at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester; Troubled Waters at the Phoenix Exeter; Future Knowledge at Modern Art Oxford, and her current solo exhibition Head to Mouth at The Gymnasium Gallery, Berwick. Her work is presented in many major collections as well existing as significant permanent public commissions, including The Space of Reading the Bodleian Library in Oxford and TREE at the Natural History Museum in London. She also has a work, GRAIN, permanently installed at County Hall in Trowbridge. Tania is currently Professor of Drawing at Bath Spa University, and lives and works in Devon.
